SUMMARY:David Hazeltine
DESCRIPTION:David Hazeltine - piano \nSteve Davis - trombone \nGreg Wall - saxes \nBoots Maleson - bass \nTim Horner - drums \nDavid Hazeltine is one of a handful of contemporary pianists who has mastered all of the major musical skills\, from improvisation and technique\, to accompaniment\, arranging\, and composition. Even more impressive\, David is the rare artist able to innovate in each category. Thus it’s no surprise that he’s the most recorded contemporary jazz pianist of our time\, having recorded thirty five CD’s as a leader and hundreds more as a sideman\, on various major labels globally. A Milwaukee native\, David was playing the clubs as a preteen\, and before he’d even come of age he was already grabbing the attention and respect of jazz legends like Sonny Stitt\, and Chet Baker. \n

SUMMARY:FREE COMMUNITY EVENT: "Suite For Africa” with the Amina Figarova Sextet featuring the Matsiko World Orphans Choir at Bedford Middle School
DESCRIPTION:SCROLL DOWN FOR TICKETS OR CLICK HERE \nCheck out this great Amina interview with JazzFC board member Richard Epstein on his WPKN radio show\, “Sometimes Classical" \nHappenstance played a hand in two of pianist Amina Figarova's finest recordings. The first time around it was September Suite (Munich Records\, 2005). Though based in the Netherlands at the time\, Figarova was staying in New York City when the planes flew into the World Trade Center buildings on September 11th\, 2001. The music for the album was her reaction to the event\, to the grief and mourning it caused. Heading a superb sextet\, she created a beautiful ode to mourning\, making something good from the horror of death and destruction. (read a review of September Suite here). \nThe making of her Suite For Africa has an element of chance\, too. Inspired by the students she met during her travels to South Africa\, a subsequent airline glitch found her and her husband\, flautist Bart Platteau\, on a flight with the Matsiko World Orphan Choir\, a group of orphaned and at-risk children from the war-ravaged country of Liberia. \nA chance came\, and Amina Figarova took it. The result is that the pianist's sextet was joined by the glorious 24- piece choir on her 16-minute "Suite For Africa\," in addition to five of her intricately arranged instrumental tunes. \nIn 2022 Figarova released a terrific album entitled Joy (Amfi Records). The title\, one small word\, captures her artistry. That is unchanged in Suite For Africa. Opening with "Dancing Clouds"—an aptly titled sextet tune—allows the leader to display her light\, probing touch. Her arrangements for the band are exquisite. With the exception of flautist Platteau\, the ensemble has changed over the years\, and Figarova said of an earlier version of her septet—2009's September Suite ensemble—that: "I am just the person who writes the notes\," crediting her mates with bringing her music to life. They deserve the credit; every solo on every album she has released brims with inspiration\, featuring a spaciousness sitting beside a lively small combo orchestral vibe. But that person who writes the notes and assembles the band and arranges the music—this often majestic and unfailingly gorgeous tapestry—deserves all the kudos that come her way. \nThe "Suite For Africa\, Parts 1 through 3"—"Spirit Africa\, Spirit Liberia\," "Fifteen As One" and "Forgotten Children"— feature the 24-voice choir. The joy and innocence\, the youthful exuberance and the obvious zest for the task at hand are up front\, bubbling with an embrace of life\, despite the less-than-optimum life circumstances. Combined with Figarova's sextet and the adventuresome playing all around\, the music exhibits a joyous and spellbinding listening experience. \nNo less important are instrumental numbers. Over a long career\, Figarova has proved herself a top-level jazz arranger. Suite For Africa sounds somewhat like a pared-down version of trombonist Melba Liston's writing for pianist Randy Weston's big bands combined with the exhilaration of early Hugh Masekela along with the Zulu jive sounds that were born in South Africa. In addition\, the soloing—Figarova's piano\, Platteu's flutes\, Alex Pope Norris's trumpet and flugelhorn\, Wayne Escoffery's brawny tenor sax—is magic. As is the entire project. \nThis free performance has been generously underwritten by an anonymous donor to to make this incredible project open to community members of all ages. \n \nTo make a donation to support the work of JazzFC and their educational and outreach activities click here.

SUMMARY:The great Johnny O'Neal
DESCRIPTION:Critics and peers acknowledge Mr. O’Neal as perhaps the leading exponent of mid-20th-century jazz piano technique. “He’s a very special cat\,” said the pianist Barry Harris\, a bebop luminary who mentored Mr. O’Neal in the 1970s and ’80s. “If ever somebody sounded like Art Tatum\, it’s him. He’s got it all.” \nThe similarity wasn’t lost on the director Taylor Hackford\, who cast him in the role of Tatum in the 2004 biopic “Ray.” In one scene Mr. O’Neal sits onstage at a club\, flawlessly carrying off Tatum’s signature downhill sprints and herculean harmonic leaps. \nThe guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel\, 43\, who has featured Mr. O’Neal as a guest performer at his concerts\, considers him “an important figure” for younger players to hear. “My jaw dropped when I heard him play piano — and then my heart dropped when I heard him sing\,” Mr. Rosenwinkel said. \nPerforming with Joe Farnsworth on drums and Yuriy Galkin on bass

SUMMARY:Caelan Cardello
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\nBorn into a musical household in Teaneck\, NJ\, Caelan Cardello practically had music infused in his DNA from the start. He started playing piano at the age of 5 and within two years had begun parallel arcs of formal training in both classical and jazz piano\, starting with jazz pianist/arranger Allen Farnham and Juilliard classical alum Steve Masi. Caelan’s consistent musical growth enabled him to secure mentorships with some of the most sought after luminaries in the jazz piano pantheon\, most notably Fred Hersch\, Frank Kimbrough and Dave Kikoski \nCaelan’s early involvement with several distinguished arts programs figure prominently in his musical development. First and foremost was the renowned Jazz House Kids in Montclair\, NJ - a comprehensive and immersive community jazz arts program developed and run by jazz vocalist Melissa Walker and husband\, bass icon Christian McBride. Caelan often held “featured artist” status when playing with the JHK ensembles and his 7 years with the program afforded him invaluable opportunities to play and study with some of the most prominent figures in jazz today including Jimmy Cobb\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Jack DeJohnette\, Wallace Roney\, Ravi Coltrane\, Paquito D'Rivera\, pop songsmith Bruce Hornsby and of course Christian McBride to name but a few. As an alumnist of the program\, Caelan’s affiliation has continually opened doors for him to perform with many other celebrated jazz greats in NYC’s legendary jazz haunts like Dizzy’s Club\, Minton’s Playhouse\, Smalls Jazz Club and The Jazz Standard. \nCaelan cites two additional program experiences as being particularly impactful; they are his performances with The New Jersey All State Orchestra (2016\, 2017) and the prestigious National Young Arts NYC program (2018) for which he was selected from a substantial and very competitive pool of talented young musicians. \nOver time\, Caelan’s musical accomplishments and live performances have garnered him several prestigious awards including the New Jersey Governor's Award\, the James Moody College Scholarship Award for “Outstanding Musicianship\,” and the prestigious 2021 BMI Foundation’s Future Jazz Master Award which lists Ahmad Jamal\, Ron Carter and Herbie Hancock among their judges. One honor of particular mention is the “Outstanding Soloist” award he received at the Charles Mingus HS Competition & Festival which resulted in Caelan being “tapped” for a “sub” slot with the Mingus Big Band at the Jazz Standard in NYC. Most recently\, Caelan was selected as one of the five finalists for the very prestigious American Pianists Association Jazz Piano Competition. The competition prize includes career assistance and touring\, with a value of over $200\,000. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaelan graduated from William Paterson University with a Bachelors degree in Jazz Piano Performance. During his time there he found himself again under the tutelage of many venerable Jazz Masters including Bill Charlap and the late great Harold Mabern. He regularly performed with William Paterson Jazz Ensembles\, being featured at WBGO and playing shows at Dizzys Club in NYC. When not performing\, Caelan devotes his attention to furthering his musical studies in performance\, composition\, arrangement and digital music technology. \nCurrently\, Caelan plays both solo and with his trio in NYC\, around the tri-state area and tours throughout the US.
