SUMMARY:Frank London and The Elders - "Spirit Stronger Than Blood- a celebration of Life"
DESCRIPTION:Frank London - trumpet \nGreg Wall - tenor saxophone \nRobert Piket -piano \nHilliard Green - bass \nNewman Taylor Baker - drums \nHear our interview with Frank London \nRecently diagnosed with myelofibrosis\, an extremely rare blood cancer\, London decided to release Spirit Stronger Than Blood as a celebration of life. After a serious battle\, Sir Frank (he was knighted by the government of Hungary!)  has gained the upper hand and is once again touring the world\, composing\, and playing better than ever.  This concert is the official CT release of the new release on ESP-Disc. \n"Encompassing six originals\, the program kicks off with “Let There Be Peace”\, an eternal prayer whose modal jazz appeal evokes the elated spirit and pure fire of Pharaoh Sanders. London pairs beautifully with saxophonist Greg Wall in the frontline\, well supported by the rhythm section of pianist Marilyn Lerner\, bassist Hilliard Greene\, and Matthew Shipp Trio’s drummer Newman Taylor Baker. \nThe swinging modalism of “Resilience”\, which London dedicates to the late trumpeter Lester Bowie\, serves the burning saxophone outpours of Wall\, who\, very much in the foreground here\, works on top of Lerner’s unceasing harmonies. The title track\, “Spirit Stronger Than Blood”\, is heartbreakingly introduced by piano and trumpet in a meditative rubato passage that soon gives way to a 3/4 rhythmic flux delicately underpinned by bass and drums. Imbued with an encouraging\, positive energy\, this number ends with emotive trumpet wails conveying both beauty and sorrow with dramatic flair.”  Filipe Freitas\, Jazz Trail \nTrumpeter/composer FRANK LONDON is a member of the Klezmatics\, Hasidic New Wave\, The Elders\, and has performed with John Zorn\, LL Cool J\, Mel Torme\, Lester Bowieπs Brass Fantasy\, LaMonte Young\, They Might Be Giants\, David Byrne\, Jane Siberry\, Ben Folds 5\, Mark Ribot\, Maurice El Medioni and Gal Costa\, and is featured on over 100 cds. His own recordings include INVOCATIONS (cantorial music); Frank Londonπs Klezmer Brass Allstarsπ DI SHIKERE KAPELYE and BROTHERHOOD OF BRASS; NIGUNIM and THE ZMIROS PROJECT (Jewish mystical songs\, with Klezmatics vocalist Lorin Sklamberg); THE DEBT (film and theater music); THE SHEKHINA BIG BAND; the soundtrack to THE SHVITZ; the soundtrack to Perl Gluck's THE DIVAHN and four releases with Hasidic New Wave ( co-led by JazzFC Artistic Director Greg Wall).

SUMMARY:“Speak No Evil”\, a Tribute to Wayne Shorter
DESCRIPTION:Greg Wall - tenor Saxophone \nAndy Gravish -Trumpet \nJen Allen - Piano \nEssiet Essiet- Bass \nSylvia Cuenca - Drums \n  \nThe great Wayne Shorter\, 1933- 2023\, was among the  most influential improvisers and prolific composers in Jazz history. \nSince his first performances with  Art Blakey in the late 1950’s\, he stayed at the forefront of Jazz\, simultaneously straddling the past and the future of the music. \nAlthough his saxophone playing was inimitable\, his writing influenced just about every jazz composer to follow\, \nSpeak No Evil was one of several albums Wayne recorded for Blue Note in 1964\, his first year as a member of Miles Davis’s mid-1960s quintet. The album is generally regarded as one of Shorter's finest\, and also a highlight of the Blue Note catalogue. NPR’s Murray Horwitz stated in 2001 that "Speak No Evil is sort of a consolidation of Wayne Shorter's compositional excellence. It's so thorough and consistent and wide-ranging. It's almost a manifesto for his ideas. Those ideas were new 40 years ago\, but they're still fresh today.” \nNew York Times critic Ben Ratliff included the album in his publication Jazz: A Critic's Guide to the 100 Most Important Recordings stating that it offers "the first taste of a gnomic compositional style that would haunt jazz forevermore… Just about everybody playing jazz born in the 1950s and after accepts it as a foundation.” \nOn June 12\, as part of our Distinctive Disc playlists series\, we will celebrate the compositions that make up “Speak No Evil” with a stellar group of artists who have been listening and performing this music their entire careers. Come hear how this music is still alive and growing\, 60 years later! \nPianist Jen Allen has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Don Braden\, Jimmy Greene\, Freddie Hendrix\, Camille Thurman\, Nat Reeves\, and Sarah Caswell. An active recording artist\, her discography includes her debut album Pieces of Myself\, Sifting Grace\, her upcoming release Possibilities\, and collaborative projects like Raise Up by Trio 149. SUMMARY:Marc Copland (co-sponsored by WPKN)
DESCRIPTION:This show kicks off the new JazzFC/WPKN 89.5 partnership\, a monthly collaboration to spread the word about top-tier jazz performances straight to the heart of our community. \nBorn 27 May 1948\, Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, USA\, pianist Marc Copland was a part of the vibrant music scene in Philadelphia as a saxophonist before going to New York where he met John Abercrombie and also played with Chico Hamilton\, and others. He experimented with the electric alto but gradually became dissatisfied with the direction his music was taking and\, leaving New York\, quit playing the sax in order to study piano. He was gone for almost a decade but upon his return to the jazz world in the mid-80s his piano playing was a revelation\, his own vividly original style firmly in place. As a sideman he played with Bob Belden\, Jane Ira Bloom\, Joe Lovano\, Tim Hagans\, James Moody\, Wallace Roney and many others. \nBut his career as a sideman in the Apple was relatively short-lived; Copland began recording and touring in trio with Gary Peacock and Billy Hart (At Night/Sunnyside\, Paradiso/Soul Note) In the nineties\, his reputation spread owing to three legendary recordings with the Savoy label\, which put him on the road in an All-Star quintet (Randy Brecker\, Bob Berg\, and Dennis Chambers)\, and later in quartet with guitarist John Abercrombie\, Drew Gress\, and drummer Hart. \nCopland has enthralled audiences not only in trio and as a solo pianist\, but also as a duo partner without peer—as attested by his duo recordings with Greg Osby (Night Call\, Round and Round/Nagel-Heyer) and Gary Peacock (What It Says/Sketch). \nMarc Copland - piano \nYuriy Galkin - bass \nGreg Wall - saxophones \nStreve Johns - drums

SUMMARY:Michael Rabinowitz
DESCRIPTION:Michael Rabinowitz\, bassoon \nRoberta Piket\, piano \nRich Zurkowski\, bass \nDavid Alvarez III\, drums \nGreg Wall\, soprano saxophone \n  \nWhether blowing bebop over a Mingus tune or freely improvising with Anthony Braxton\, Michael Rabinowitz's contributions have changed the conception of what the bassoon can do. Since graduating with a BFA in music performance from SUNY at Purchase in the late seventies Michael's improvisatory skills opened the door for the bassoon to enter a variety of musical environments not traditionally associated with the instrument. \nHe has recorded with Ira Sullivan\, Red Rodney\, Wynton Marsalis\, John Hicks\, Dave Douglas\, Chris Potter and Joe Lovano. His festival appearances include Chicago\, Montreal\, Berlin\, Tri-city\, Tanglewood\, San Francisco and Hollywood Bowl. Michael is a founding member of The Charles Mingus Orchestra which can be heard regularly at the Jazz Standard in NYC. His quartet Bassoon and the Wild has performed at the The Vanderbilt Planetarium\, Frick Museum\, JVC Jazz Festival\, \, Penn State\, Kavehaz and other venues in NYC. Ocean Eyes is Michael's 5th CD and documents the development of his quartet with mostly original compositions. The Buffet Group USA has been Michael's sponsor for the past fifteen years and has supported his participation in performances and master classes at the IDRS most notably the Jazz at June Festival in Oklahoma with oboist Paul McCandless. In 2009 Michael was awarded a grant from Chamber Music of America in collaboration with French oboist Jean Luc Fillon and released their CD On the Reed Again.  In 2014\, Michael formed a group called The Odd Couple Quintet with jazz horn virtuoso John Clark. Michael has conducted masters classes at many universities and has released four feature albums. \nThere have been a few reported snags to our trusty ticking system\, so if you experience any difficulty\, please call Stephanie at 475-298-5079

SUMMARY:Giacomo Gates
DESCRIPTION:  \nGiacomo Gates does more than sing “a bunch of songs.” He is truly an entertainer\, for all ages and styles\, as audiences enjoy the music\, the interaction on the bandstand between him and his musicians\, the spontaneity\, the humor\, the stories about the music and composers\, along with their relation to everyday life. People are smiling\, having a good time\, while thoroughly enjoying the music. What usually lacks in most of today’s performances is obviously present … fun! \nThe criteria for defining jazz singing will probably be argued for the rest of time. But no matter which side of the argument one may be on\, there can be no doubt that Giacomo Gates is an authentic jazz vocalist. Heavily steeped in the traditions of the original vocal improvisers from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald through their modern counterparts Betty Carter and Leon Thomas\, Giacomo’s own approach draws most heavily from the bebop-rooted masters like Jon Hendricks\, Babs Gonzales\, King Pleasure and most of all\, Eddie Jefferson. Like his influences\, Gates has forged his own unique path. \n  \nGreg Wall\, saxes\nJoe McWilliams\, piano\nPhil Bowler\, bass\nBobby Leonard\, drums
