1937 Steinway Model M

Our 1937 Steinway piano was previously housed at 323 Restaurant & Bar in Westport, Connecticut, but is currently out undergoing repairs and renovations. It was originally owned by the Village Gate, a hot jazz nightclub in New York's Greenwich Village until the club closed in 1988.

Among those who have played on it there are Michael Abene, Mose Allison, Kenny Barron, Count Basie, Borah Bergman, Allen Botschinsky, Joanne Brackeen, Patti Brown, Ray Bryant, Jaki Byard, Stanley Cowell, Anthony Davis, Harold Danko, Bill Evans, Tommy Hanagan, Red Garland, Erroll Garner, Benny GReen, Sir Roland Hanna, Fred Hersch, Earl Hines, Ahmad Jamal, Roger Kellaway, Kirk Lightsey, Mike Longo, Harold Mabern, Adam Mankowicz, Junior Mance, Bill Mays, Thelonious Monk, Eddi Palmieri, Bobby Rodriguez, Hilton Ruiz, Horace Silver, Nina Simone, Sun Ra, Billy Taylor, Cecil Taylor, Mickey Tucker, and McCoy Tyner.

It was played on such recordings as Thelonious Monk, Live! At the Village Gate (Xanadu), John Coltrane, The New Wave in Jazz (Impulse), Nina Simone, Live at the Gate (Riverside), and Milt Jackson, Live at the Gate (Riverside).

Restoration of a classic

In 2017 the folks at JazzFC decided that the piano was ready for some restorative care, and they started collecting a few dollars each week at the Thursday 323 concerts by literally passing the hat. A few months later they had enough money to begin a complete restoration of the historic instrument. Early in the spring of 2018, the piano went to Paul Haller's workshop in Stamford for a new soundboard, new strings, new pin block, and a complete overhaul of the action. After three months of painstaking work, the piano was ready. A team of virtuoso jazz and classical artists came to play-test the piano and it was unanimous: the piano was indeed worthy of its pedigree, with a unique tone and incredibly precise mechanism.

You made it happen!

Special thanks to all of our generous JazzFC members who donated the $10,000 required to purchase this piece of jazz music’s history.
